Gentleman's Farm
Washington, Connecticut
A scenic 70-acre retreat, sited on a hilltop affording distant views of Mount Tom. The main house is shown at top. Also converted a barn into an entertainment arcade with a billiards room, movie theater, and pub. Renovated a guest house, built a post-and-beam barn for a collection of classic cars, and designed the 2018 Palladio Award-winning enclosed garden.
The last piece of the puzzle was the pool house....

Clad in silver weathered siding and punctuated by crisp copper overhangs and lanterns, the simple form takes it cues from the surrounding historic barns, in a more contemporary vocabulary. Retractable glass panels blur the lines between interior and exterior, while bluestone paving of the pool terrace extends into the building creating a porch-like interior.
Why Sonoma Forge?
We were searching for high-quality plumbing fittings and accessories which were both bold and rustic, complementing the rural simplicity of the building. For the outdoor shower, it was particularly important to find copper fittings which would relate to the copper architectural details of the building exterior. For the interior, the darker bronze finish provided a crisp contrast to the white-washed pine walls. Coordinated cabinet hardware, hooks and accessories provided touches of the distinctive Sonoma Forge style throughout the building.
A copper-clad wall is the backdrop for the outdoor shower, set in a jungle of lush tropical plantings.

Interior Design
The simple, elegant interior of bleached pine boards and bluestone slabs is highlighted by playful contemporary lighting and fabrics. The building is served by a convenient pantry and clever accommodations have been provided for storage of pool toys and accessories.

A series of fully retractable doors create a porch-like interior.
Pool and Landscape
In a resort-like atmosphere with lush tropical plantings, the pool terrace is framed with tall grasses providing privacy and capturing the breeze.
The pool incorporates a submerged spa and gradual entry platforms allowing for lounging in the water.
Carefully designed lighting extends use of the pool house into the evening hours.
